This film really sneaks up on you.  At first it does not appear to be anything more than the traditional coming-of-age movie about a boy growing up in a questionable area with bad family dynamics.  But as the story unfolds you begin to see that there is so much more to all of the characters than you first realized and that not everyone was who they appeared to be.  I particularly enjoyed the differences between the boys because I had some of the same kinds of friends.  You could tell who was going to be successful, who was going to be a burnout, etc.  All in all a nice little film.
