Overview
Stuck at a crossroads in her personal life, it falls on high school English teacher Miss Stevens to chaperone three of her students — Billy, Margot and Sam — on a weekend trip to a drama competition.
I couldn’t help but think of Anthony Bourdain when I was watching this movie. In the pilot of his show “No Reservations” he visited local French restaurants. While he was there he marveled at the wood-fired ovens and all of the other ways that the French cook and eat that would not be allowed here. During the film the main character lamented that she had to keep her distance in order to preserve the teacher-student boundaries instead of providing the empathy that should provide to another adult.
While this movie features two future stars in Chalamet and Reinhart it is really Rabe that brings this whole movie together. I’ve long been a fan of coming-of-age movies as well as movies about road trips – it is rare to see both themes in the same film. The movie really had a charm and an honesty about it that I absolutely loved.
