Overview
Sophie, a quiet and shy maid working for the upper-class family Lelievre, finds a friend in the energetic and uncompromising postmaster Jeanne, who encourages her to stand up against her bourgeois employers.
While this film was made 26 years before this review its message seems as important today as it was then. At the core of the story is a woman who seems to have a marginal intellect. She doesn’t read books and is instantly captivated when she discovers the idiot box (television). Not surprisingly, the performance at her work begins to slip. Things change again when she meets someone who has strong opinions about her employers and her life. The woman slowly becomes more aligned toward the stranger and then things really change. I thought the movie was an excellent representation of the dangers of not thinking and assuming that someone that has a better lot in life than you is taking advantage of you. Be your own person.
