Overview
Leonard is an English tailor who used to craft suits on London’s world-famous Savile Row. After a personal tragedy, he’s ended up in Chicago, operating a small tailor shop in a rough part of town where he makes beautiful clothes for the only people around who can afford them: a family of vicious gangsters.
This movie is a throwback to movies made long ago (which I don’t always mean as a compliment). The movie is essentially a mystery / thriller, and one of the things that I love about the movie is that it takes places in the office of a “cutter”. The office (and the profession) is one that demands order and a certain level of decorum and thus would seem to be the last place where such a movie would take place. This backdrop allows everything to take place right out in the open. Rylance plays the role of the cutter to perfection and it is this character that is the heart of the movie. The simplicity of the story allows the audience to dig into his character as the movie unfolds. The movie reminded me a lot of Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy, although I thought this movie was more accessible than that one. I really enjoyed it.
