Overview
Based on the real-life adventures chronicled by Cameron Crowe, Fast Times follows a group of high school students growing up in Southern California. Stacy Hamilton and Mark Ratner are looking for a love interest, and are helped along by their older classmates, Linda Barrett and Mike Damone, respectively. At the center of the film is Jeff Spicoli, a perpetually stoned surfer who faces-off with the resolute Mr. Hand—a man convinced that everyone is on dope.
After years of hearing this movie quoted over and over again on morning radio shows for the last 3 decades I decided to give it a look. I know, I know – I am watching it way out of the context of the 80’s. I know that I am going to see 30-something actors piling on the innuendo while pretending to be high school students. Once you get past all of the famous scenes it is actually a pretty mundane movie. It doesn’t try to be as wacky as other movies of the time and when you get past the cliches there is actually a sweet underbelly to the movie.
