Overview
In a climate change-ravaged world, a utopian society optimizes life, including parenthood assessments. A successful couple faces scrutiny by an evaluator over seven days to determine their fitness for childbearing.
First and foremost, the acting is absolutely stellar in this movie. I knew that Olson was a tremendous talent and I had been looking forward to seeing Vikander some more – she did not disappoint. I might be wrong about this, but I saw the movie as a commentary on the awful process of trying to conceive a child when you need outside assistance. While the “assistance” in this movie comes in the form of the government, it still felt very much like the same process that I had gone through when trying to have a child. Anger, heartbreak, despair – it was all there at different points. If you look at it from that perspective (and I might be completely wrong), the movie (and especially the ending) work a lot better.
