Overview
While traveling for work in a city far from their homes, a novelist and a corporate accountant find themselves in bed together. Although she’s married, and he’s seeing someone, their intense attraction turns a one-night stand into an unexpected relationship and a respite from the obligations of daily life. Through a series of moments – some profound, some silly, some intensely intimate – we see a portrait of an evolving relationship that could become the most significant one of their lives.
The director did something really unique here: he used the backdrop of cheating to tell a story about relationships. Because the main characters only get to see each other when one has a business trip, the story takes place over several years. When they do get together, we see the same events that we see in everyday relationships: animal attraction at the beginning, jealousy, fear, anger, etc. I think that so many of the people that saw the movie missed that point. And as with any other relationship, the couple has to decide if they are going to take the plunge. In the final scene of this movie, “the plunge” is a little different than that of a traditional relationship, but the idea is still the same.
I discovered this movie after watching the very excellent Sparrows Dance by the same director and Marin Ireland. I wish the two had made more projects as I have enjoyed their movies.
