Overview
After the insane General Jack D. Ripper initiates a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union, a war room full of politicians, generals and a Russian diplomat all frantically try to stop the nuclear strike.
Is this movie a dead-on satire of every important topics? Absolutely. Is Sellers one of the great comedic actors of all time? Sure is. Is this movie a good watch? No, not really.
Before you @ me (and please don’t), let me explain. First, I am not a fan of satire that lasts longer than a Saturday Night Live skit. It gets old really fast. The satire is brilliantly done, but that is all there was to hang their hat on. A show like The Righteous Gemstone also features a ton of satire, but they don’t hang their hat on it. The story behind the satire is mediocre and the film barely limps to the finish (the last five minutes are horrid).
I get that I am in the minority. I completely get why people love it (which is also probably pretty ironic because a good number of them are probably the idiotic Americans that the movie satirizes) and I am not trying to convince anyone that they shouldn’t love it. It just wasn’t for me.
