Overview
Tom, greeting-card writer and hopeless romantic, is caught completely off-guard when his girlfriend, Summer, suddenly dumps him. He reflects on their 500 days together to try to figure out where their love affair went sour, and in doing so, Tom rediscovers his true passions in life.
I spotted this movie on many “best of 09” lists and decided to look it up on rottentomatoes. What is the first thing it says in tag line? “If you liked ‘High Fidelity’, you’ll love this movie. Well as luck would have it I LOVED HF so I decided to give it a look.
I was a little disappointed. As a Rom-Com it was decent (especially by today’s standards). The difference between this film and a film like HF is that HF starts with real conversation about movies, music and the appreciation of such art while this film has the love story and then sprinkles in some brief references to music and movies. HF was a film about the growth of a person, while this film was… well, a love story.
Worse, in the last 10 minutes the film goes in a direction that is not at all consistent with the rest of the film. It isn’t a plot twist or anything like that – it just doesn’t fit.
