Ah, they don’t make them like this anymore. I LOVED this film. At the heart of the movie is De Niro vs. Pacino. Bad guy vs. good guy. But it isn’t a cliched mess that so many of their recent films have become. While this is technically a crime drama, you really don’t get the feel that it is about crime. The themes in the movie (men vs. women and the symbiotic relationship between cops and robbers) really give the movie a unique flavor that we would later see in The Sopranos, The Wire, etc. The director took great care to develop the characters so that you had a real feel for who they were. What is sad is that many viewers will say that the movie is a little slow and that it needed more action. Unfortunately, those are the movies that we get these days. My other favorite part of this film is that you saw Pacino and De Niro at the height of their powers before they started their slide into the caricatures that they have become. I forgot just how much I enjoyed each actor when they were at their best. In this movie, they were.
