Overview
The Texas Rangers chase down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, but the gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.
I saw this film for two reasons. One, I wanted to see what the commotion was about. It tooks years to make this film, supposedly because the studio thought that it would be awful. But I also saw it because I was jonesing for a movie that had a 7.1 surround track on it and these seem to be few and far between. I really didn’t mind it. There were parts that were really really funny and parts that were hokey. In a weird kind of way I had the same kind of thoughts about this film that I had about Blue Jasmine. I really didn’t know what it was trying to be. A comedy? Western? Drama? Supernatural thriller? Excused to see Johnny Depp play an extravagant character? (side note: he is awesome) . As a comedy it really worked at times. As a drama, not so much. I could see this going more of a Coen-esque route and being even more of an off-beat comedy than it already was.
