51 Birch Street

I came across this documentary while going through Roper’s old “best of” lists.  At the root of this movie is the passing of a mother and the discovery that she had left behind boxes of diaries.  Her son decided to read the diaries and realized that his mother was a very unhappy woman.  I think the most interesting question that isn’t answer is “did she want people to read her diaries”?  I almost have to assume that the answer is “Yes” because she seemed to have left them out in plain sight.

Anyway, the son gives the doc a little artificial drama by first painting his father in a questionable light and then later switching gears to show the true story of what happened with his parents.  I guess without this twist maybe the doc wouldn’t be able to stand on the premise that “boy realizes his parents weren’t happy”?

IHATEBadMovies.com reviews 51 Birch Street

Movie title: 51 Birch Street

Movie description: Documentary filmmaker Doug Block had every reason to believe his parents' 54-year marriage was a good one. But when his mother dies unexpectedly and his father swiftly marries his former secretary, he discovers two parents who are far more complex and troubled than he ever imagined. 51 Birch Street is a riveting personal documentary that explores a universal human question: how much about your parents do you really want to know?
