A Prairie Home Companion

The film is far better when it focuses on the main stars and their musical journey and less successful everywhere else.  Fortunately there is enough of the former to make up for the latter.  The parts with Virginia Madsen are just plain weird.  It’s almost as if Altman didn’t think the music and the story of the show could carry the movie so he felt he had to inject some additional attempts at drama.
