Overview
A SERIOUS MAN is the story of an ordinary man's search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and F-Troop is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik, a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous acquaintances Sy Ableman.
The latest entry into the Coen Brothers’ catalog is a dark comedy dressed up as a drama. I’m at a bit of a loss to describe the film. It is rather slow-moving but I’ve never minded such movies as long as the script is good. I guess I’d say that the film is a series of character studies. It is kind of like being dropped into the middle of small-town America and being a fly on the wall for a while. If you like… well… serious movies, you might want to give this a shot. Rebecca didn’t like it but I really enjoyed it.
