Overview
A determined teenage boy struggles to find acceptance within the Jr. Lifeguards of Hermosa Beach while juggling relationships and challenges in the summer of 1986.
It is really, really hard to screw up a coming-of-age movie. You throw in some young kids of various types – cute, nerdy, bully, cool – and put them in the run-of-the-mill scenarios and you have your movie. If you’re looking for a good coming-of-age film there are precisely 5,045 better films than this one. The Way, Way Back is one such example.
Where to start? At times (especially the awful scenes at the beginning of lifeguard training) it felt like a bad episode of Shameless. Music bed and wackiness – ugh. At other times it felt like I was watching Meatballs all over again. Every time it felt like maybe it would transcend some of the mediocre scenes…. more mediocrity. It just felt very amateurish.
