Overview
Bacurau, a small town in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their community has vanished from most maps.
I think what this film does so well is celebrate family and community. I come from a small town that is part of a larger area that has seen better days so in a lot of ways I could relate to the people of Bacurau. Also, as the movie begins to play out there is some violence but at no point does it ever devolve into something that Tarantino would be proud of. The director gently handled so many of the film’s themes with a very subtle approach. Also (and without saying too much), I thought the use of the Americans in the film was perfect especially when you look at it against the backdrop of the last several weeks in America. We’ve seen these people in the movie and unfortunately also on the news. While watching the movie I kept trying to think of another movie like it but I could not.
