Billy Brown just got out of jail. Now he’s going to serve some real time. He’s going home.
Overview
Billy is released after five years in prison. In the next moment, he kidnaps teenage student Layla and visits his parents with her, pretending she is his girlfriend and they will soon marry.
I’ve read various reviews for this movie, and most seem to miss the point. Much of the first half of the movie is difficult to watch because so many of the characters are awful, and that is the point. I grew up in a house that did not have love in it, so I could completely understand how difficult it was for Billy to relate to other people. I don’t have his anger (my father was not angry like his), but that is irrelevant. You can’t imagine how hard it is to allow people in and to be vulnerable when it has only been you for your entire life.
The beautiful piece of this film is Ricci’s character, of course. She sees something in him that I have to admit I did not see. And who knows, maybe she is wrong and she ends up being another woman that has subjected herself to an overbearing man. But based on the final few scenes, I don’t think it goes that way. In that sense, the movie reminded me a lot of Hateship Loveship, except that movie was focused on the female (Kristen Wiig).
