A rambunctious extended family descends upon their small Long Island hometown for the holidays where hijinks, generational squabbles, and family traditions ensue.
Not sure if this movie is for you? I can help. The movie takes place on Christmas Eve at a house that seems to have 83 rooms. Over the course of the first 20 minutes, approximately 267 guests arrive. You have no idea who they are, and in most cases, no idea how they are related. There are a couple of minor storylines, but other than that, you are a fly on the wall for the evening. And underneath the entire movie is a constant stream of pop music from several decades ago (in some ways, the movie feels more about the music than the scenes on screen), and the music provides much of the nostalgic feeling. While the movie is set at Christmas, it could have also been set on any other holiday (there really isn’t a Christmas feel to it).
The movie kind of reminded me of another movie where the viewer was a fly on the wall – Rachel Getting Married. But at least that movie had some kind of storyline and character development. If you like movies where you are after nothing more than “I remember that in my own life”, then this movie is for you. I was actually invested in it for the first 45 minutes (there are some mildly amusing scenes), but it started to become annoying after that.
