I used to take copious notes while reviewing movies but after creating more than 1100 reviews the practice seemed unnecessary as it became harder and harder to find good movies.  I loved this movie and I wish I had written down all of the thoughts and emotions I had while watching it.  It’s not for everyone and it takes a while to get into it but the viewer is rewarded for the patience.  First and foremost, this movies works because of the incredible subtle performances by Phoenix and Hoffman.  One can watch this movie on many levels – the one that stuck out the most for me was how difficult it is to be a parent (the fabulous The Lost Daughter also touched a bit on this).  I can’t tell you how many times I saw Phoenix struggle to acquire the new skill and I said to myself “I remember that”.
