Overview
When Will decides to tell his daughter the story of how he met her mother, he discovers that a second look at the past might also give him a second chance at the future.
I’ve come to believe that rom coms are kind of like pop music. Both are generally frowned upon and there is a struggle to try not to be embarrassed for being a fan of any entries into the genres. I think a decent rom com – despite the propensity to saturate us with sweetness – will transcend the genre and demand that we get swept in to the story. As a viewer we can enhance the experience by not fighting it and just going along with it.
While this film doesn’t rise to levels of some of the other classics (Love Actually, Sleeping with Other People, etc) I really enjoyed it. The film does something that I can’t ever remember another rom com doing: while going through his dating history there didn’t seem to be any bad guys (or gals). There were only missed connections. Some people complained about using the daughter as a device to tell the story – I thought it was clever. For what it is (a rom com), I really enjoyed it. If you feel good at the end it had to have done something right.
