Overview
A husband is on trial for the attempted murder of his wife, in what is seemingly an open/shut case for the ambitious district attorney trying to put him away. However, there are surprises for both around every corner, and, as a suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse is played out, each must manipulate and outwit the other.
What a unique movie! At different times the movie feels like both a high-quality thriller and a breezy mystery. While Anthony Hopkins is absolutely perfect as the pseudo-villain (although to be honest he could do this role in his sleep) I really think that Gosling’s role is the more interesting one as he transforms from an over-confident young lawyer into what he was meant to be. The movie also stands out because the mystery (and the conclusion) is accessible to the viewer if they are paying attention. I hate when there is a mystery and you spend a lot of time working on it only to have the resolution be something that was not part of the story and thus not accessible to the viewer.
