I’ve never been accused of being the most touchy-feely guy in the world and it may come as a surprise to some that I do have that side of my personality. I think in a weird way that my struggles with getting in touch with my emotions has made me a little more sensitive to the items that do kick me in the arse.

LA Story came out the year that I graduated High School and I remember seeing it in the theater. I loved it instantly as it involved a lot of the things that you don’t see in a movie – it was a dark, twisted, romantic comedy. Sure, it is unabashedly syrupy at times and there is a bit of a fantasy aspect to it but that was done by design. The movie was meant to be a semi-spoof of life in Los Angeles. It is a shame that Steve Martin sold his soul in so many other films as he could have been one of the great comedic writers of our time. His early work was fantastic but the only work of his that I have liked in the last ten years was the amazing Shopgirl.

One side note on the movie: I know that I bashed her in a recent blog Sarah Jessica Parker was downright cute in this movie. One statement in the movie is that you can tell if a guy is recently out of a relationship is that he is taking up with a younger woman. She played the ditzy girly absolutely perfectly.

I did give this movie an 8.5 but part of this was based on my own personal sentimentality. Once again, a movie can be appreciated on many different levels and sometimes I do allow myself to take the thinking cap on and enjoy a film on a different level. I should probably do it more often.
