Overview
Addie Moore and Louis Waters, a widow and widower, have lived next to each other for years. The pair have almost no relationship, but that all changes when Addie tries to make a connection with her neighbour.
This is one of those movies where you pretty much know how you are going to feel about the movie during the opening scene. Fonda comes to visit the reclusive Redford, and the two have a rather surprising conversation. The themes of the movie and the pace at which they will be explored are put on the table for all to see. I was captivated by the scene.
What follows over the next 90 minutes is an exploration of so many themes. While Fonda is absolutely radiant (does anyone have more expressive eyes?), it is Redford that gets a chance to sink his teeth into a character that needs to be transformed, and he hits it out of the park. Even the final scene is perfect: we don’t get a grand resolution as that isn’t the point of the film. These two have grown old and have learned how to navigate the curveballs that are thrown at them. In the final scene, we see that ability on display again.
