Overview
High school athlete Cyd Loughlin lives alone with her depressive father in South Carolina, perpetually longing to get away from it all. When her aunt, famous novelist Miranda Ruth, agrees to host her for a few weeks during the summer, Cyd jumps at the opportunity. While there, she falls for a girl in the neighborhood, even as she and her aunt gently challenge each other in the realms of sex and spirit.
Part of the struggle with taking in a movie like this is that it isn’t necessarily clear how to watch it. The film is meant to be a slice-of-life that takes place over the course of two weeks. While many themes are brought up in the movie, the movie purposefully does not get into any of them with any kind of depth. I think many people that had a negative review of the movie missed this point. This movie is more of a hang, and the audience is a fly on the wall. In that sense, this movie felt somewhat fresh and unique.
