Overview

A nobleman with a literary flair, the Marquis de Sade lives in a madhouse where a beautiful laundry maid smuggles his erotic stories to a printer, defying orders from the asylum's resident priest. The titillating passages whip all of France into a sexual frenzy, until a fiercely conservative doctor tries to put an end to the fun.

How could they have gotten this movie so wrong given the talent in the cast?  The movie was just kind of all over the place.  At first it (correctly) seemed to be about forbidden pleasures and desires before dropping the sexual appeal in favor of drama (and at times, comedy).  The movie just didn’t seem to work once the sexual tension subsided.   And for some reason Rush didn’t work – it might be that every time I see him I think of Captain Barbosa as his mannerisms are often the same.  So disappointing.
