Overview
A samurai answers a village's request for protection after he falls on hard times. The town needs protection from bandits, so the samurai gathers six others to help him teach the people how to defend themselves, and the villagers provide the soldiers with food.
Please take my review with a grain of salt as I am generally not a fan of older cinema. I can COMPLETELY see how this movie is so important in the history of film. After all, you don’t have to look far to see how many movies the director influenced – Star Wars, the Spaghetti Westerns, and countless more. That said… in the year 2025, this is not necessarily a great watch. So much of the dialog is really mediocre. I don’t know if the “defend the fort” theme necessitated the runtime – at times I felt like I was sitting around with them, waiting for the next attack. The film worked best when it showed the differences in class. While this movie was the first in so many areas, it doesn’t take long for people to come along and build on top of it. Such is the way of the world.
