Overview
A young boy whose parents just divorced finds an unlikely friend and mentor in the misanthropic, bawdy, hedonistic, war veteran who lives next door.
Overall the movie was just about what you would expect. This theme has been done before – some better, others definitely worse. I am a little surprised that Murray took this movie because it didn’t quite fit the type of movie that he has done the last twenty years (criminally underseen indie movies, like Broken Flowers). I am also surprised that Murray tried to maintain the Irish accent throughout the movie because he was not consistent with it from scene to scene (which was a bit distracting). I would like to have seen the three leads with something more substantial to work with rather than the “cranky old guy next door needs saving” theme.
