Overview
On the south shore of Long Island in the summer of 1983, a group of working-class teenagers and 20-somethings work their summer jobs, fall in and out of love, and wrestle with what the future holds when the summer ends and the real world beckons.
I’ve always been a fan of both coming-of-age movies as well as movies where characters are thrown together for a limited period of time. I think that the latter allows the viewer to feel like they too are participating in this moment in time.
In this movie we are introduced to characters that are living through their last summer before college. In many ways the movie plays like a network tv drama. There aren’t really any major events that happen through the course of the movie and the dialog is mostly very sterile. Also, all of the budding relationships have the same consistency: one character is hopeful and the other is jaded and stoic. That said, it is an easy watch. I’ve seen this movie done better (The Way, Way Back always comes to mind) and worse (too many to count).
