Overview
Alex, Emily, and their son, RJ, are new to Los Angeles. A chance meeting at the park introduces them to the mysterious Kurt, Charlotte, and Max. A family “playdate” becomes increasingly interesting as the night goes on.
What I liked most about this film is that it took a unique and smart approach to tell a story. In other movies the hijinks of the host couple would have been some kind of bad comedy. While this is certainly a dark comedy, their actions have a purpose and it isn’t until later in the movie that things start to come into focus. While I generally like Schwartzman I think he has never been better than his work in this film because of the nuances required to color his multi-faceted character. Finally, I thought that they left the ending exactly where it should have been.
