Overview
Two ex-lovers get snowed in at a regional airport overnight. Indefinitely delayed, Willa, a magical thinker, and Bill, a catastrophic one, find themselves just as attracted to and annoyed by one another as they did decades earlier. But as they unpack the riddle of their mutual past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they begin to wonder if their reunion is mere coincidence, or something more enchanted.
This is one of the most deeply personal movies that I have seen in a long, long time. In a perfect world, it probably should have been Hanks in the lead role (that is not a shot at Duchovny. It is a tip of the hat to nostalgia.
As a man who has also drifted into the backside of his life, this film really resonated with me. Of course, I grew up with Ryan and I loved Nora Ephrons films (for whom this film was dedicated). “The Unforgiven” was Eastwood’s summary of his career in Westerns – I think that this movie is the same for this actor and genre. It really is beautiful.
