The story of Bea Johnson from birth to graduation as she navigates life with an intellectually disabled parent and an extended family who can't quite agree on the best way to help.
I was looking forward to watching this movie for two reasons. One, there are a ton of actors that I have seen in other projects that I usually enjoy (especially Jean Smart). And two, there was a giant chasm between how the critics rated the movie and how the audience felt. In my experience I usually agree with the audience. In this case…. not so much.
It almost felt like the director thought that if he just made a movie about a girl that was raised by disabled/special parents, that would be enough. And apparently for many in the audience, it was. But you just can’t roll the basketballs out into the middle of the gym and call it a practice. This movie almost two hours long and it felt like it was twice that. Kiernan Shipka did her best to try to carry this film through completely needless scenes, but it was a bridge too far. At times it felt like we were a fly on the wall watching this movie in real time.

My Review
