Young Adult

For the life of me I can’t figure out why Charlize Theron isn’t a bigger star.  Sure, she did some big Hollywood movies like Fury Road and Atomic Blonde.  But those were action movies and she is a tremendous dramatic actress – her most recent example of this are Tully and Bombshell (she was by far the best part of that movie).  In this movie she did something that I think is hard to do – she played a despicable character without having the character be too despicable.  For some reason I kept thinking of Katherin Heigl’s perfomance in the (severally over-rated) Knocked Up since that felt like someone that couldn’t play this kind of character.  There is such a thing as too whiny.  Anyway, it was an ok movie until the ending – it really surprised me in a good way.  I wasn’t expecting it and it was refreshing.
